First attested as Vosseburen in 1861. Borrowed from an earlier version of West Frisian Foksebuorren, a compound of the surname Vos and the plural form of buer (“house, cottage”). Named after Anna de Vos, a local inhabitant. The first element was gradually reinterpreted to foks (“fox, Vulpes vulpes”) in Frisian.
