From Middle High German wāfen, from Old High German wāfan (compare Yiddish וואָפֿן (vofn)), from Proto-Germanic *wēpną. Akin to Dutch wapen, English weapon, Danish våben, Swedish vapen, Gothic 𐍅𐌴𐍀𐌽 (wēpn). Doublet of Wappen (“coat of arms”), which is borrowed from Low German.
