German
Etymology
Borrowed from Low German Warf, from Middle Low German warf, werf, from Old Saxon hwerf, probably from hwervan (“to turn around”). The word was first adopted as Werft (17th c.), which became specialized to the sense “shipyard” in High German. Since the 19th century, newer Low German Warf was introduced for differentiation, taking on the same unetymological -t as its doublet. Cognate with Dutch werf, English wharf and Old Norse hvarf (“circle”).
