Nupe is a Niger-Congo language spoken in the Middle Belt of Nigeria. This page details standard practice to be followed on all Nupe entries.
The tones should be marked in the headword line and not in page titles. High tones are marked with the acute accent (´), low tones with the grave accent (`), and mid tones are unmarked except in cases of a tone-bearing syllabic nasal, in which case a macron (¯) is used.
Contour tones are to be transcribed as sequences of level tones. When a high tone follows a low tone it should be marked with an acute accent (ˊ). In comparison to earlier orthographies:
Nasal vowels should be represented with the sequence V + n as follows:
With the exception of when they come after /n/ or /m/ — /mã.dã/ is written as madan.
Elongated nasal vowels should be written with a dash (-) — /gã̀ã́/ is written as gàn-án.
