About

Võro belongs to the Finnic languages group, which belongs to the Uralic languages group. It has traditionally been considered a dialect of the South Estonian dialect group of the Estonian language, but nowadays it has its own literary language and is in search of official recognition as an autochthonous regional language of Estonia. Võro has about 70,000 speakers (Võros) mostly in south-eastern Estonia.

On Wiktionary, Võro refers to the entire South Estonian dialect cluster, rather than just the Võro subdialect, but is lemmatised at the Võro standard. As such, Seto, Mulgi, Tartu and others should be considered "dialectal" Võro.

Orthography and alternative forms

Wiktionary follows the Võro standard spelling. This includes the following features different from the Estonian orthography:

  • ⟨õ⟩ is used to write both /ɨ/ and /ɤ/. Older orthographic variants where ⟨y⟩ was used for the former can be recorded as alternative (superseded) spellings.
  • ⟨q⟩ is used to write the glottal stop /ʔ/
  • The palatalised consonants are written as ⟨b'⟩, ⟨d'⟩, ⟨f'⟩, ⟨ǵ⟩, ⟨h'⟩, ⟨k'⟩, ⟨l'⟩, ⟨ḿ⟩, ⟨ń⟩, ⟨ṕ⟩, ⟨ŕ⟩, ⟨ś⟩, ⟨t'⟩, ⟨v́⟩, ⟨ź⟩. Any variation on this is treated as a typographical variant and should only be included to serve as a redirect.

Dialectal forms should be included as well. If an equivalent literary form exists, these dialectal forms should be marked with {{lb|vro|dialectal}} {{alternative form of|vro|...}}. If a form is limited to a certain specific dialect (especially Seto), the name of this dialect should be given in the label template instead.
