General
Entry templates aid in the creation of new entries. They are given as options for a new entry if there is no exact match when searching. To use the templates, contributors can simply type a word into the search box and press Go. The choices for entry templates appear as buttons when there is no exact match. The corresponding language must be set in Preferences in order to see them.
After selecting an entry template, the text of the template appears in the edit box for the new word. The preloaded text provides a framework for completing an entry. The entry templates are guides containing formatting and comments, and leaving out crucial details as gaps to be filled by the contributor. They are most useful when they save the contributor time and least likely to be used when they are cumbersome.
This page concerns the design and maintenance of these templates.
Dos and Don'ts
- Follow the conventions established by the consensus of the Wiktionary community, as outlined in Entry layout. Of course there is some flexibility in the actual creation of new entries, and these templates do not dictate the style that must be followed for any particular word. However, as the default for many new entries among all contributors, the style encapsulated within the templates themselves should be consistent.
- Update entry templates when old styles fall out of favor or new changes are to be implemented at large scale.
- Revise content that is cumbersome and of no benefit. Add content that is relevant to the specific entry template and useful to its audience.
- In order to prevent wrong categorization of the templates themselves it is possible and recommended to use <includeonly> as in
<includeonly>]</includeonly>
with any template used as a preload. It works just like it does with normal inclusion.
- While it would be useful to categorize the templates, it is not currently possible to use <noinclude> as in
<noinclude>]</noinclude>
with any template used as a preload because of technical limitations in MediaWiki.
- Share your experience as a contributor by offering new templates that you have personally found useful in the creation of entries. Although they are currently broken down by part of speech, the themes of these entry templates are not rigid. Consider a like-minded contributor trying to hammer out the format and how they might benefit.
- Avoid the potential for an edit war. Clearly comment any changes to the entry templates, even minor ones. Do not try to effect a change in the overall style or formatting by altering the templates without discussion.
