Inspired by a comment above, should we not reduce the protection on the main page to semi-protection. With this

  1. Unregistered users will not be able to change it
  2. Users who’s accounts are new (4 days old I think) will not be able to change it

every one else will. Good idea?, bad idea?, I think good. Gerard Foley 15:22, 17 February 2006 (UTC)

I love this idea. But I don't know of any way to implement it with the current MediaWiki software. --Connel MacKenzie T C 19:02, 17 February 2006 (UTC)

It's already a part of MediaWiki and active on Wikipedia, see w:George W. Bush fo an example. Gerard Foley 20:03, 17 February 2006 (UTC)

Well, so far, that feature is not available here (not even for testing.) I asked around on Wikipedia and was referred to Brion. When I tried interrupting him on IRC he blew my request off; Tim suggested it is difficult to implement...but then they were rather busy with other stuff at the time. Perhaps someone more diplomatic than myself (that's about 90% of this community population) could try contacting the developers to request the "Semi-protection" feature activation for the English Wiktionary.
In the meantime, does anyone have objections to me moving the contents of MediaWiki:Nogomatch to Wiktionary:Project-Nogomatch so that it can be edited freely? With {{Wiktionary:Project-Nogomatch}} as the MediaWiki page's only content, anyone editing would then be able to test it just as easily as I can. --Connel MacKenzie T C 07:09, 18 February 2006 (UTC)
OK, whomever did whatever, Thank you! Developers have now enabled this feature here. I'll experiment with the above example in the next few minutes. --Connel MacKenzie T C 19:54, 18 February 2006 (UTC)
Experiment now in place, please try it out. Change bolding or italics or something. Then we can revisit the proposal at the very beginning of this section: semi-protecting Main Page. I think such an action should require a vote. --Connel MacKenzie T C 20:33, 18 February 2006 (UTC)
Everything about the experiment seems to be working as expected. --Connel MacKenzie T C 04:32, 19 February 2006 (UTC)

Vote: Should Main Page be lowered to "Semi-protected" experimentally?
