Questions
Before making a decision on this, I'd like to ask a question. Certain comments on your website, such as "I claim copyright on anything I write or say on the Internet...", including, apparently your username, raise questions about what kind of ownership you are claiming over your Wiktionary work. Also, you note on your userpage that you release rights to your minor edits, implying perhaps that you claim to retain them on other edits. As the GFDL nature of Wiktionary is one of its fundamental principles, would you please clarify your position on this matter? Thank you. Atelaes 02:42, 25 January 2008 (UTC)
- Obviously I don't speak for Msh210, but I'd like to point out that the GFDL actually depends on copyrights for its viral qualities. Certainly there's nothing wrong with an editor releasing some or all edits into the public domain, but by default all editors retain their copyrights and release their edits only under the GFDL, and there's nothing wrong with making that explicit. (See Wiktionary:Copyrights#Contributors' rights and obligations for more information on how this works.) —RuakhTALK 05:07, 25 January 2008 (UTC)
- While all Wiktionary edits are released under the GFDL, I do retain some right to them (no one may use them in a way not explicitly allowed by the GFDL). As to my username, I doubt one can copyright on such a thing; what I claim is the right to it as a service mark. In any event, nothing I say overrides the notice ("all contributions to Wiktionary are considered to be released under the GNU Free Documentation License") that appears above every "Save page" button on Wiktionary: even if I were to claim that I don't release my Wiktionary edits under the GFDL (which I do not claim), I doubt that that would have any teeth. And as to my release of my minor edits, I release all rights to them. Certainly most Wiktionary edits are not so released: this is a greater release than under the GFDL. (I got the idea from Wikipedia, incidentally; see w:Wikipedia:Multi-licensing.) I hope that this answers your concerns, Atelaes.—msh210℠ 02:16, 27 January 2008 (UTC)
