Hi! I just thought it was a good idea to have Babel language templates here just like the English Wikipedia has. Please add the appropriate language templates to your user pages and copy any missing templates and categories from Wikipedia. This way we'll soon complete the process. the Babel "project" is great thing, but in my opinion in current approach (since beginning) there is one drawback: unless one knows the language s/he will not understand what language is in question. In my opinion there should be wording also in the language of wiki, here in English. I have proposed this change few times in Wikipedia but no much feedback, I hope we can make this change here, before it grows bigger in current way.

  I have made examples here to illustrate it. Also i think that there is no point to write long text a la "this user can speak.." it will be enough to state level and language name. This "this user can speak.." -text can be placed on top of the templates. This way it is also easier with different languages, where words(/sentences) are "long", babel box doesn't "explode". --TarmoK 11:26, 28 September 2005 (UTC)Reply

• it's probably deprecated, and doubtful Babel supports it, but in my personal notes I usually indicate dialects with dot TLD codes, e.g. eng.us, eng.uk, eng.au, eng.ca Nicoleta

I added "art-goauld-1" for the Goa'uld language from Stargate SG-1. Is this the proper notation? I got it from http://en.wikipedia.orghttps://dictious.com/en/ISO,_SIL,_and_BCP_language_codes_for_constructed_languages . I'm shocked they got Klingon an ISO 639-3 code. Stargate is way better than Star Trek, they should definitely add Goa'uld too. Nicoleta

The help page mentions 'articles', but that was taken from Wikipedia. Since we don't have articles on Wiktionary, what would be a good substitution so that the different levels are still useful for us? —CodeCat 23:34, 26 April 2011 (UTC)Reply

I wonder if it has to do with the fact that you are using {{#Babel:cs|etc}} rather than {{Babel|cs|etc}}, and/or that we don't have a Template:User kl-0. We do have Template:User kl-1, etc, so if you switched to using {{Babel|cs|etc}} (our native Babel system) rather than {{#Babel:cs|etc}} (the Wikimedia-wide system), those would work. Yes, it's a bug in the #Babel system. That system is maintained, not by en.wikt, but apparently by translatewiki.net: here are the pages, which someone has created with the wrong (Danish) text: kl-0, kl-1, kl-2, kl-3, kl-4, kl-5, kl-N. I'm not sure where translatewiki's equivalent of our grease pit is that you could report the problem. :/ - -sche (discuss) 02:23, 8 February 2015 (UTC)Reply

I suspect the problem is that no one has translations for Greenlandic, and that Danish is used as a fallback because it's a relatively common second language in Greenland. Chuck Entz (talk) 03:52, 8 February 2015 (UTC)Reply

They have a link for Support on the left side of the page there, and you could start a thread. The whole operation looks like a Wikimedia spinoff, with the translations provided by a "community of translators", which sounds like a wiki. Chuck Entz (talk) 05:09, 8 February 2015 (UTC)Reply

Since I'm a native Sweed I can understand Norwegan almost with no difficulties. Some dialects might confuse me a bit but overall I understand 99%. About Danish there's a pretty big change between written and spoken since they're so full of oat meal (sorry Danes🖐🏻). I understand about as much written Norwegian and Danish since they're so similar but I understand about 15-20 % of spoken Danish with major difficulties. Can someone make a parameter like spoken= or written=. Same with other languages with other alphabeths that one might not be use to. Hi! I'm not sure what I'm doing wrong, but I can't get the grammatical gender marker to work. This is what I've already tried in a Babel template:

{ {Babel|g=-|pl} }

(without the spaces)

@82calamities: Babel boxes are for indicating what languages you speak and what technical skills you have. Gender- grammatical or otherwise- is completely irrelevant. Gender can be indicated using a setting in your user preferences. Chuck Entz (talk) 10:57, 15 July 2023 (UTC)Reply

I think that the grammatical gender is relevant here. It's used when gendered languages show in the Babel boxes. The user gender preference that is set by the user page-wide doesn't seem to affect the Babel boxes - I changed my preference to female pronouns and my boxes remain masculine/"default" despite that.

On another note, the grammatical gender *is* mentioned as an optional piece of code in the Babel help page. 82calamities (talk) 16:58, 16 July 2023 (UTC)Reply

Alright, I found the troublemaker. Not all Babel language boxes have the gender option implemented. Russian and Latin have those, for example, while Polish lacks that completely. Adding "g=f" to my Babel code worked on Russian and Latin, certainly. Now I need to find out how to edit the Polish Babel boxes for everyone, not just me... 82calamities (talk) 17:09, 16 July 2023 (UTC)Reply
