From the Mandarin pronunciation of Chinese 楊浦杨浦 (Yángpǔ, literally Poplar Bank), a 1950 clipping of earlier 楊樹浦杨树浦 (Yángshùpǔ, literally Poplar Tree Bank), after the name of a creek that formerly ran through the area beside present-day Lanzhou Rd.
