English
Proper noun
Zaltbommel
- A city in Gelderland, Netherlands.
- A municipality of Gelderland, Netherlands.
Dutch
Etymology
First attested as in bomala in 850. Etymology uncertain. Potentially a compound of zout (“salt”) and a compound element derived from Old Dutch bom (“tree”) and lo (“light forest”). The element zout potentially refers to trade in salt or, alternatively, to a tidal bore that drove seawater to the city. The interpretation of the first element as Proto-Germanic *salah- (“willow, Salix”) is incorrect. Compare Maasbommel.
