Etymology

First attested as Zittert in 1865. Presumably derived from Middle Dutch sitter (common land) (indirectly derived from Latin sectura (common land)) with epenthetic -t. An alternative hypothesis proposes a derivation from Old High German sigituri (section of forest intended for logging) (derived from Latin secretarium). Compare Sittard, Zijtaart and Zittard.
