From Proto-Finnic *aigasta-aika, from *aigasta (from time), and *aika (time), possibly borrowed from either Proto-Germanic *aiwaz (long time, eternity), from Proto-Indo-European *h₂óyu ~ *h₂yéws (long time, lifetime), from *h₂ey- (vital force, age), or from earlier *ajeka and borrowed from Proto-Germanic *ajuka- (time, eternity); see the Proto-Finnic entry for more.

Cognate with Finnish ajastaika, Ingrian aastaika, Livonian āigast, Võro aastak, and Kukkuzi aastaika. Equivalent to ajast +‎ aeg.
