Most probably a derivative of áiškus (“clear, bright”) + -tis, although attempts have been made to derive it from Proto-Indo-European *h₂eig-; compare Sanskrit एजति (éjati, “move, stir”), Ancient Greek αἰγίς (aigís, “rushing storm, hurricane”).[1]
