Hungarian

Etymology

ajtó (door) +‎ fél, originally a genitive construction; the latter element of debated origin:

  1. Deriving from Proto-Finno-Ugric *pele or *pēle (column, stang),[1] compare Finnish pieli (jamb, post), Estonian peel (pole, post), and Moksha (päĺ, peg, pole). This Hungarian term then coincided with the presumably unrelated Hungarian fél (half) and the (definitely unrelated) Hungarian fél (to be afraid).[2]
  2. Deriving from fél (half, side).[2]

Although neither origin can be excluded, the first seems to be more likely, while even in that case the sense fél (half) may have affected the development of this term.[3]
