Etymology
alue(“region”) + hallinto(“administration”) + virasto(“office, authority”), coined in 2009 when the reorganization of state regional administration was planned. Aluehallintovirasto replaced the former lääninhallitus, and lääni was discontinued as administrative unit from the beginning of 2010.
