Etymology

Inherited from Latin lūbricāre (make slippery). The original form was the now-obsolete lureca as intervocalic -r- and -n- are occasionally mixed in Romanian phonological evolution (cf. senin from serēnus and mărunt from minūtus), probably the result of anti-rhotacism in response to rhoticism in Transylvanian dialects, in which case these terms were percieved as having been rhoticised. The -b- in the Latin consonant cluster -br- usually disappears in transitioning to Romanian (cf. faur < fabrum, fior < febris, and fereca < fabricāre).
