Sometimes contrasted with levis artēria, artēria levis, denoting just a “vein”, or bloodvessel, but Ancient Greek ἀρτηρῐ́ᾱ (artēríā) meant a windpipe already. It is a calque of Ancient Greek τραχεῖα ἀρτηρία (trakheîa artēría), hence also the order of the two words, asper meaning “rough, rugged” like τραχύς (trakhús).
