Inherited from Middle French hobette, diminutive of hobe (hut, cottage), which is either inherited from Old French huve or a borrowing from Middle High German hūbe, both meaning “hood, cap, bonnet” and ultimately from Proto-Germanic *hūbǭ. The use for roofs, shelters and suchlike is attested for German Haube, Dutch huif, but may also have developed independently in French.
