Turkish
Etymology
By surface analysis, ayna (“mirror”) + sız (“-less”).
The slang sense is of uncertain origin. Folk etymology claims that the “police” sense is from the fact that in the 1970s, Turkish police used Renault 12 TSs, which lacked one side mirror; the concept of lacking a mirror came to be associated with the police. However, the sense dates back to at least the 1930s, so this cannot be correct.[1]
Another folk etymology cites the belief that police officers are so ashamed that they cannot look themselves in the mirror.
An older meaning of “formless, ugly” dates to at least 1889 and is supported by the existence of the antonym aynalı (“handsome, beautiful”) (By surface analysis, ayna (“mirror”) + lı (“-ful”)).[2]
