Usage notes

Similarly to the case of nagybátya (“uncle”, dated), suffixed forms of bátya have been reinterpreted (reanalyzed) as having the stem báty (compare nagybáty, currently standard), so the latter forms (báty and nagybáty) are the usual base forms today. Nevertheless, relationship terms are normally used in Hungarian with possessive suffixes (see the second chart below).
