Etymology

According to a folk etymology recorded by Bùi Minh Đức in his work Từ điển tiếng Huế (2001), the fruit name was adapted from French bon (good; tasty):

2001, Bùi Minh Đức, Từ điển tiếng Huế [Dictionary of Hue lects], page 33:

It was said that, one time while fleeing , Emperor Gia Long was starving that he had no other choices but to eat this fruit in the forest. Found the taste pleasing, he passed some to his French entourage. After tasting them, the French remarked "bon, bon" , hence the name "bòn bon" used by the locals, even though the Emperor had decided to name the fruit "Nam Trân".
