Inherited from Old Czech břězen, from Proto-Slavic *berzьnъ (March; April), from *berza (birch), which starts to bud (and give sap) in March,[1][2] + *-ьnъ. Alternatively, it might be derived from březí (gravid), because livestock are usually pregnant ("gravid") in March.[2]
