From Proto-Vietic *buːŋʔ, from Proto-Mon-Khmer *buŋ() ~ *buuŋʔ. Cognate with Khmer ពុង (pung), Mon ဗုၚ် (pɜ̀ŋ), Nguôn pũng, pụng, Thai พุง (pung).
