From Late Latin ballō, ballāre, perhaps from Ancient Greek βαλλίζω (ballízō, “to dance, jump about”) found in Sicilian Greek dialects spoken in Magna Graecia. Compare Italian ballare, Sardinian ballare, Venetan bałar, French baller, Asturian baillar, Spanish bailar, Portuguese bailar.
