From Ottoman Turkish بایقوش (baykuş), from بای (bay, “rich”) + قوش (kuš, “bird”).[1][2][3][4] Alternatively, inherited from Proto-Turkic *bāyk- (“owl”), and folk-etymologically connected to *kuĺ (“bird”).[5] Compare also بایقره (baykara, “a bird of prey”).
Cognate with Azerbaijani bayquş, Turkmen baýguş (ba:ýguş), Kazakh байғыз (baiğyz), Persian بایقوش (bâyquš) (a Turkic borrowing).
