Inherited from Old Anatolian Turkish بَشَاقْ (başaq, “arrowhead”), بَاشَاقْ (başaq) from Proto-Turkic *baĺčak, a derivation from Proto-Turkic *baĺč[1]. The sense of "grain ear" is attested since atleast 1680[2]. By surface analysis, baş + -ak. Compare Turkish başak, Azerbaijani başak.
