From Middle Dutch besmeren, from Old Dutch *bismiren, *bismirwen, from Proto-West Germanic *bismirwijan. Equivalent to be- + smeren. Cognate with German beschmieren and English besmear. A variant Hollandic form gave rise to besmeuren.
