From Middle Dutch smuyck, from Old Dutch smuyck. The prefix be- was added as phonetic contamination from the past participle of smuiken (“to be hidden or calm”). Compare also the related verbs smokkelen and smuiken, all ultimately from Proto-Germanic *smukkōną (“to slide, slip through”).
