Russenorsk
Etymology
From Norwegian Nynorsk betale (“to pay”) (or it's Northern dialectal apocope form betal), with Russenorsk verb ending -om. May also be a loan from some older unknown pidgin, therefore it is possible to derive it from Danish betale, Middle Dutch betalen, or Swedish betala.
Pronunciation
Has also been registered as bitalom. The sound change e->i happened through Russian unstressed /ʲe/. Therefore at least two different pronunciations are possible:
- IPA(key): /bɛˈtɑːlum/ (Norwegian accent)
- IPA(key): /biˈtaɫʊm/ (Russian accent)
Verb
betalom
- to pay
- Synonym: plati
