Dutch

Etymology

From earlier bevrijen, from Middle Dutch bevriën, a prefixed form of vriën (to free). Can be interpreted synchronically as be- +‎ vrijen or vrij +‎ be- -en. The -d- is a hypercorrection, probably influenced by the past tense bevrijd and/or compensating for a mistakenly supposed case of d-weakening (compare vlieden); contrast vrijen, which has the etymologically expected form without -d-.
