Inherited from Ottoman Turkish بورمق (burmaḳ, to twist or screw, to wring, to strangle, to castrate, for the bowels to gripe),[1][2] from Proto-Turkic *bür- or *bur- (to twist, to wring). Possibly evolved from the form Proto-Turkic *bügür-, which was derived from Proto-Turkic *bük- (intransitive; to be squeezed, to be strangled).[3]
