Possibly a derivative of Proto-Celtic *kagyom (“enclosure, field”),[1] with influence from haenu (“to stratify, put in layers”) and taenu (“to spread, sprinkle”).[2] Alternatively from Proto-Celtic *kagnā, from a Proto-Indo-European n-stem seen also in Proto-Germanic *hagô (English haw (“hawthorn, hedge”), Dutch haag (“hedge”), Icelandic hagi (“pasture”); possibly also English hatch).
