From Late Latin camīnāta, derived from Latin camīnus (“fireplace”). From the latter came the Italian camino~cammino (“fireplace, chimney”), which shows the same /m/~/mm/ variation. This variation may have resulted from contamination with the unrelated cammino (“path”) and its derivative camminata (“a walk”).
