According to Frithiof Rundgren (1957), from Iranian *grīwbānar, from Middle Iranian *grīwbānwar, from Old Iranian *grīva-pāna-bara (“neck-guard wearer”). Middle Persian (/grīwbān/, “neck-guard”) is attested in Vendidad 14.9.[1]
