According to Frithiof Rundgren (1957), from Iranian *grīwbānar, from Middle Iranian *grīwbānwar, from Old Iranian *grīva-pāna-bara (neck-guard wearer). Middle Persian (/⁠grīwbān⁠/, neck-guard) is attested in Vendidad 14.9.[1]
