The loanword couldn't replace the dominant native word (in this case, chó) and so was assigned to a similar animal. See also the case of borrowed hồng (“pink”), from 紅/红 (“red”), vs. native đỏ. However, it seems that foxes were more often associated with weasels instead of dogs.”
