Etymology

From a Sino-Tibetan language. Compare Phuza ʑɛ³¹ ka³¹ ("door"), Nuosu (ip ko, door), Naxi ku (door). Cognate with Muong cứa.

Related to Chinese (OC *m-qˤaʔ) (B-S) (SV: hộ) through the Sino-Tibetan root, but unlikely to be derived from it since correspondences are irregular. Doublet of hộ and họ.
