Etymology

Inherited from Proto-Slavic *dǫ̀ti (stem dъm-), from Proto-Balto-Slavic *damˀtei; dumˀtei, from Proto-Indo-European *dʰemH-. Cognate with Czech dout, Serbo-Croatian ду̏ти/dȕti, Russian дуть (dutʹ), Lithuanian dùmti (“to blow; to rush”), dùmplės (“bellows”), Sanskrit धमति (dhámati) and German dämpfen, Dampf (“vapour”).
