Etymology 1

No cognate term in Standard or Western Yoruba exists (or perhaps became obsolete before it could be recorded in dictionaries), it and its cognate terms have almost been completely replaced by ẹ̀rẹ̀kẹ́ or ẹ̀ẹ̀kẹ́ amongst the dialects it exists in, where it is almost obsolete. Its existence however is documented in Central Yoruba and Northeast Yoruba dialects, which suggests its existence in Proto-Yoruba. See Proto-Yoruba *è-ɣe, *ì-ɣe. Cognate with Itsekiri èghemẹ
