esi- (“fore-”) + rippua (“to hang”, dialectal form of riippua) + -u; attested since 1544[1], originally in the sense of "dividing curtain" or "veil".[2] Possible calque of Swedish förhängsle or förhänge. In its modern sense, coined by Finnish author and journalist Pietari Hannikainen in 1845.
