From esi- + -(h)inen (through earlier etehinen); contrast etinen.
eteinen
eteinen as part of a building generally refers to the part of the building connecting the exterior door to the properly used spaces in the building. In most residential buildings, it is often not much more than a hallway or a set of hallways, one of which leads to the exterior door, possibly, especially in older buildings, through a small room (tuulikaappi). It is also usually where shoes and outerwear are left (on racks, shelves, etc.) if the house does not have a tuulikaappi. In other buildings, eteinen may be a larger area, although other terms are more often used in such cases (e.g. aula, eteishalli).
