From Latin fastīdiōsus ( “ passive: that feels disgust, disdainful, scornful, fastidious; active: that causes disgust, disgusting, loathsome ” ) , from fastīdium ( “ a loathing, aversion, disgust, niceness of taste, daintiness, etc. ” ) , perhaps for *fastutidium , from fastus ( “ disdain, haughtiness, arrogance, disgust ” ) + taedium ( “ disgust ” ) .
