Probably ultimately from Latin famelicus, through a Vulgar Latin root *flamenicus, or alternatively from a root *famulentus, from famēs (compare Portuguese famulento), through an intermediate form *flamuentus. A less likely origin is flammabundus. Compare Megleno-Romanian flămund.
