After or from Middle Low German vledermus, a combination of flagre (“flit, flap, flutter”) and mus (“mouse”). For the first element compare English flounder and Swedish fladdra. Cognate with Swedish fladdermus and Norwegian Bokmål flaggermus, and German Fledermaus, whose first word derives from Proto-Germanic *fifaldǭ.
