Borrowed from Franco-Provençal gicllar or Occitan gisclar, from Vulgar Latin *cistulāre, an alteration of Latin fistulāre (“to play the flute”), which is derived from Latin fistula (“flute”). Compare Catalan xisclar and Spanish chillar.
