From Middle High German gān, from Old High German gān, gēn, from Proto-West Germanic *gān.

The 2nd and 3rd persons singular of the present have -ee- from northern Old High German -ei-, in keeping with the Proto-Germanic irregular conjugation. The same alternation is found throughout Central Franconian as well as in Limburgish and Low German. The infinitive is from gān, while the other present forms are from gēn. This latter alternation is confined to westernmost Moselle Franconian.
