Hungarian

Etymology

Back-formation from Grúzia (Georgia), itself from German Grusiner (via earlier gruzin) and probably from Russian Грузия (Gruzija, Georgia).[1][2]

Pronunciation

Adjective

grúz (not comparable)

  1. Georgian (of or relating to the country of Georgia, its people or language)

Usage notes

The forms Georgia (for the country) and georgiai (for the people and the language) were requested by the government of the country in the 2000s but their use haven’t taken root, probably because of their sound being unfamiliar and possibly difficult to pronounce, and/or because of the homography with the U.S. state of Georgia (which has a different pronunciation in Hungarian). Also, it was shown that this Hungarian term is not (primarily) of Russian origin but of German and ultimately of Persian and Syriac descent. Sources and more information are available in the Hungarian Wikipedia article Grúzia and in the New Etymological Dictionary of Hungarian.[1]
