German
Etymology
From Low and Central German dialects, from Middle Low German grummelen and northern Middle High German *grummeln, iterative of grummen. A relation with Gram and grimmig is theoretically possible, but the words certainly have a strong onomatopoeic element. Cognate with Dutch grommelen, English grumble.
Pronunciation
Verb
grummeln (weak, third-person singular present grummelt, past tense grummelte, past participle gegrummelt, auxiliary haben)
- to grumble (make a low sound, as of a discontent person, an empty stomach, a distant thunderstorm)
Entsprechend sei die aktuelle Beteiligung von gut 50 Prozent sogar „vergleichsweise viel“.- For the low turnout Reitz makes responsible discontent within the party, in particular—a discontent he describes as structural:
”The SPD, to wit, is a grumble party.” It would not be a “party of optimists” but people who are “structurally disconcerted”. The social democrats would be “the party of bickering and bellyaching”, whose sole purpose of existence is to improve wellbeing in life—in which they “never succeed”. To accord with this, the present turnout of about 50 percent is “relative high”.
