Lithuanian

Etymology

Of unclear origin.[1] Generally connected to Latvian grīns (weak, sickly) (though not grīns in its other senses, including "firm, strong (of yarn)" and "derisive"); the assumed original meaning of the Baltic forms is "pure", and shifted in Latvian from "pure" > "bare" > "poor" > "weak". These terms are probably further connected to Lithuanian griẽti (to skim, grab), as "skimming" can be conceived of as a form of "purifying"; see there for more.[2]
