13th century. Already attested in local Medieval Latin as gandara and gandera; from a pre-Roman substrate of Iberia. While some authors have proposed an Iberian origin, this is unlikely, since Iberian was spoken in the Mediterranean coast, and this word is documented mostly in the NW of the Iberian peninsula; related to Alemannic German Gand (“scree”).
